Buying or Transferring Property Minimize

 Buying or Transferring a property?

PTA:  The Property Transfer Affidavit must be turned in within 45 days of the sale.  Electronic copies are available in the Forms section of this web page.

PRE:  If you will be moving into your new home in Erie and occupying it as your main residence, a Principal Residence Exemption (PRE) Affidavit must be turned in to the township office AFTER you move in.  The PRE reduces property taxes by exemption from the 18-mill school operating tax.

  • PRE’s turned in after June 1 will NOT qualify for exemption from the summer tax levy, but they WILL qualify for exemption from the winter tax levy.
  • PRE’s turned in after October 30 will NOT qualify for exemption this year.  The PRE will go into effect for next year, starting with the summer tax levy.

PRE Rescind:  If you will be selling or moving out of your home in Erie, please remember to file the Request to Rescind Principal Residence Exemption.  The next resident will then file their PRE when they move in.

Conditional Rescission of PRE:  If you are in the process of moving from your Erie home into another primary residence, you may qualify to file a Conditional Rescission of Principal Residence Exemption form.  This form allows you to establish a PRE on your new home and maintain the PRE on your vacated Erie home while you are actively in the process of selling it.

Public Notice Minimize

From the Assessing Department

The State Tax Commission adopted the following guideline regarding annual inspection of property within a local unit:  Local units are encouraged to annually inspect a minimum of 20% of the parcels in each property class each year.

In order to maintain accurate assessing records, Erie Township will be conducting 20% field inspections per year in order to comply with the State Tax Commission guidelines.

During the field inspections, the Assessing Department staff will check the accuracy of township records regarding land, all buildings and update photos.  We will not come inside your home but may ask property owners to verbally verify that the data we have on record is correct.  If no one is home, we will conduct our outside inspection and leave a card requesting verification of the interior information for property owners to update and return to the Assessing Department.  Assessing Department vehicles are properly marked with Erie Township identification and we also carry proper photo identification.  Please be advised that because of weather, time constraints, or other circumstances, we will not take appointments.

If you have any questions you can contact the Assessing Department on Thursdays.
